Los Angeles Cruise Ship Injury Lawyers

For many, getting to go on a cruise is a dream come true. How tragic is it then when that dream turns into a nightmare? Sadly, that has been the case for far too many cruise ship passengers over the years. There are several types of incidents that can lead to cruise ship injuries and deaths for both passengers and crewmembers, including but not limited to:

  • Foodborne, waterborne or airborne illness
  • Slip and falls
  • Drowning
  • Assault
  • Falls overboard
  • Fires
  • Sinking
  • Collisions with other vessels or the shore

Cruise Ship Accident Statistics

A 2013 New York Times article concerning cruise ship accidents and injuries contained interesting statistics about such incidents, including:

  • Cruise ships losing power for a few hours happens often enough that the expert the Times interviewed called it common;
  • There were 79 cruise ship fires from 1900 to 2011;
  • Cruise ships ran aground 98 times from 1972 to 2011, which averages out to 2.5 times a year;
  • Between 1980 and 2012, 16 cruise ships sank.

While the above statistics may paint a broad picture of the dangers those on cruise ships can face, incidents that have taken place aboard vessels in the last few years are much more telling:

  • In January 2015, a 4-year-old boy nearly drowned in a Royal Caribbean cruise ship pool;
  • In January 2012, the Costa Concordia, an Italian cruise ship, hit an underwater obstruction, capsized and sank, resulting in 32 deaths.
  • According to the Daily Mail, a son alleges that after his 84-year-old mother picked up a bug on a P&O cruise ship and developed a chest infection, the ship’s doctor forced her to leave the ship at a port in Mexico. The family requested the woman be allowed to stay on the vessel for three more days until the ship reached its final stop, but were told the ship is a “hotel, not a hospital.” After staying in a hospital in Mexico, the woman was flown to San Francisco, where she died.

Who Can Sue After a Cruise Ship Accident?

Cruise ships often contain a wide array of people from varying backgrounds who are there for reasons ranging from pleasure to employment. Those injured due to another’s negligence while on a cruise ship or the families of the victims of wrongful death cruise ship accidents may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit against those responsible for their pain and suffering. Cruise ship accident survivors and loved ones of wrongful death cruise ship injuries who may be able to sue can include:

  • Passengers who were victims;
  • Parents of unmarried victims;
  • Spouses of victims;
  • Grandparents, siblings and biological/adopted children of victims;
  • Those who were financially dependent on a victim.

This above list contains only some of those who may be able to file a lawsuit following a cruise ship accident or injury. Anyone who was hurt on a cruise ship or lost someone they love because of a cruise ship injury or accident should talk to a cruise ship injury lawyer as soon as possible following the incident. A cruise ship accident attorney can review an injury victim’s case and determine the best option for the victim or their family, which could include a lawsuit.

How Can Los Angeles Cruise Ship Accident Attorneys Help Victims?

Unfortunately, for anyone injured or whose family member is killed in a cruise ship accident, cases involving cruise ship negligence can be extremely complex. This is because such cases fall under admiralty and maritime law, which is one of the legal profession’s most specialized areas of practice. While each country has its own version of maritime and admiralty law, which are laws that govern actions that take place on or near the water, in many ways, these laws are international.

If you’re involved in a case, such as a cruise ship accident, it is crucial that you have a lawyer representing you who understands the mountain of details that make up admiralty and maritime law. If you don’t, you may be unable to hold those who hurt you accountable or receive proper compensation for your injuries, because your attorney could fail to:

  • Know how to deal with treaties and international laws that can limit cruise ship passengers’ rights;
  • Meet deadlines concerning certain statutes of limitation, because he or she does not become aware of them until too late;
  • Understand proper procedure in maritime lawsuits, leading to your case being thrown out.

Why Should I Call Cruise Ship Injury Lawyer Josh Glotzer?

In cases involving cruise ship accidents and injuries, it is important that victims and their families act quickly. The longer victims wait, the less likely they are to be able to prove those at fault caused their injuries including pain and suffering, because in the blink of an eye, statutes of limitation can be missed and evidence lost.

Personal injury lawyer Josh Glotzer of Glotzer & Leib, LLP understands the urgency necessary in cruise ship injury cases. He knows the stakes are high for accident survivors and the families of fatal injury victims, as the outcome can mean the difference between the proper compensation for your injuries including any future monies needed for medical care and one of struggle and uncertainty. Attorney Glotzer’s case results prove that he is dedicated to obtaining justice for his clients and will work tirelessly to obtain the result that his clients are entitled to under the law, whether that’s taking all the proper steps to negotiate a fair settlement or taking a case to court and trial if necessary.

      “Mr. Glotzer represented me after I was involved in a car accident. I was badly injured,but the insurance company refused to offer me a reasonable settlement. I decided to find an attorney and decided to hire Josh.

      His law firm did a great job on my case. They were very responsive to all my questions and obtained a great resolution for me. I received way more money than was originally offered. I would recommend their firm to friends and family.”
